Haha…I'm watching this at 1:10 in the morning after sleeping all day (I took a benadryl earlier) while trying to figure out how DS9's 26 hour cycle would affect humans…so many layers here lol

summary:
– biological cycle to keep our body in sync with day and night
– internal time keeping device – sync to the rising and setting of the sun (appearance and disappearance of natural light) – messing with it can be catastrophic for us
– affects the 3 big necessities:
– eating
– sleeping
– mating

(everything from testosterone secretion to bowel movement suppression)
– main ingredient regulating it → found in the hypothalamus → responsible for connecting our nervous system to our endocrine system → Suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)
– connected to our optic nerves → making it respond to light and dark
– in the morning, when our optic nerves sense light, SCN sends the signal to raise our temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and delay the secretion of melatonin which helps us with sleep.
– as we rise through the morning, our memory, alertness and concentration sharpens – we tend to be at our cognitive best during late morning
– this is followed by an afternoon lull – the highest desire to sleep is between 2AM to 4AM. A close second is between 2PM – 3PM. Hence, napping is an important and natural part of our daily rhythms. Humans are the only species that exhibit once-a-day sleeping pattern that we have become accustomed to. Afternoon naps might be in our best interest.
– Following this, we have another period of alertness.
– As the sun sets, the SCN picks up the signals of changing lights. Organs shift to low gear. Our body temperature is reduced and our sleep hormones are activated. However, our daily schedules do not correlate with sunrise and sunset anymore due to our new lifestyle.
– Disruption to our natural rhythm leads to health issues like diabetes, obesity, depression and dementia.
– up to 15% of our genes are regulated by circadian rhythms.

So now we know that it is completely normal and natural to feel sleepy in the mid-afternoon. Most office jobs prohibit the practice of taking a power nap in the mid-afternoon. They generally make this restriction based on the ignorant prejudiced belief that if you sleep during the workday, then it means you are lazy or that you did not get enough sleep the night before. This prejudiced belief is pure nonsense.
If you are on the job in an office job and you feel sleepy due to short-term fatigue, then you are unable to do any productive work. The only way to become productive is to refresh yourself. The only way to refresh yourself is to take a short nap. In Japan, office workers are allowed to nap during the workday. It is not considered “lazy” in their culture. Their cultural belief is that if someone is napping during the workday, it is because he worked so hard. Some people fake it. I hate it when ignorant prejudiced people tell me that I need to see a “doctor” if I feel sleepy during the workday.
If I give someone a car and $1000 to buy gas and tell him to drive from NY to LA and refill the gas tank only ONE time, then it will not work!

My spouse and myself are different.
He’s up early, and really gets things done early. I’m not even tired at 6pm, when he is, I have a lot more energy in the evening.
I have tried, for years to fall asleep at 9PM on his schedule. I just can’t and I feel wired…
He makes me feel bad for waking up late, and doing things late… hey now!
I don’t rag on you for doing things early and loud in the AM.
Our bodies, do what they do… they know our rhythm. They can’t all be exactly the same!

If our 2nd most desired time to sleep is at 2-3pm, how comes the bodies best coordination time slots in at 2:30pm?
